"Password123!" is cracked in seconds. But memorizing `J7#kL9!qV2@` for fifty sites is impossible. Here's the system that actually works.
Why Passwords Still Matter
Despite biometrics and passkeys, passwords guard most of your digital life. Attackers don't "guess" — they use leaked databases from breaches. If you reuse one password everywhere, a single breach hands them every account.
The Rules of a Strong Password
- Length beats complexity. A 16-character passphrase outmuscles an 8-character symbol salad.
- Unique per site. Non-negotiable. One breach must never cascade.
- Unpredictable. No names, birthdays, pet names, or keyboard walks (`qwerty`).
- Never shared over email, chat, or sticky notes.
The Passphrase Method
String 4–5 random words together: `correct-horse-battery-staple` style. It's long, memorable, and brutally hard to crack. Add a number or symbol if a site demands it: `correct-horse-battery-staple-42!`.
The Real Answer: Use a Password Manager
Memorizing dozens of passphrases still doesn't scale. A password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, KeePass) generates 20-character random passwords for every site and fills them automatically. You memorize exactly one strong master passphrase.
Bonus security win: password managers won't autofill on phishing sites — the domain doesn't match, so nothing fills. That's a free phishing alarm.
Level Up With 2FA
A strong password + two-factor authentication is the gold standard. Even if a password leaks, the second factor stops the attacker. Enable it on email first (your email resets everything else), then banking, then social accounts.
Password Don'ts
- Don't reuse passwords across sites — ever.
- Don't use the same "base" with small tweaks (`Summer2024!`, `Summer2025!`).
- Don't store passwords in a notes app or spreadsheet.
- Don't answer "security questions" truthfully — treat them as second passwords (your mother's maiden name is public record; a random string is not).
Quick Migration Plan
- Install a password manager today.
- Change your email password first (it's the master key).
- Enable 2FA on email and banking.
- Over the next week, rotate passwords on important accounts as you log in.
An hour of setup buys years of account security. There's no better return on investment in personal cyber security.
