Spyware is malware with one job: watching you. Keystrokes, messages, browsing, location — silently collected and sent to someone else. Here's how it works and how to fight it.
How Spyware Gets On Your Device
- Bundled with free software — shady “free” apps and downloads carrying hidden passengers.
- Phishing links and attachments — one click installs it silently.
- Fake updates and pop-ups — “Your device is infected, install this cleaner!”
- Physical access — someone with your unlocked phone for two minutes (stalkerware).
- Exploits — unpatched vulnerabilities allowing silent installation.
Warning Signs of a Spyware Infection
- Battery draining unusually fast, device running hot
- Unexplained data usage spikes
- Strange noises or echoes during calls
- Phone restarting on its own, or taking very long to shut down
- Unknown apps you didn't install
- Browser homepage/search engine changed
- Contacts receiving messages you didn't send
Stalkerware: A Special Warning
Spyware installed by someone you know — a partner, family member, employer — is called stalkerware. It's a serious personal safety issue. If you suspect it: use a safe device to seek help (domestic abuse hotlines can advise on safe removal), don't tip off the installer until you have a safety plan, and consider a full factory reset performed with expert guidance.
How to Remove Spyware
- Disconnect from the internet to cut the data feed.
- Run a full antivirus/anti-malware scan (reputable tools detect most commercial spyware).
- Check app lists carefully — remove anything unfamiliar (Settings → Apps).
- Check device admin / profiles — spyware often grants itself admin rights; revoke them before uninstalling (Android: Settings → Security → Device admin apps; iPhone: Settings → General → VPN & Device Management).
- For stubborn infections: factory reset. Back up only personal files (not apps/settings), then reset and reinstall apps fresh from official stores.
- After cleanup: change all important passwords from a clean device and enable 2FA.
Prevention
- Official app stores only; check permissions before installing
- Keep OS and apps updated
- Don't click unexpected links/attachments
- Lock your devices (strong PIN/biometrics) — physical access is spyware's easiest path
- Review app permissions quarterly
The Bottom Line
Spyware thrives on inattention: unpatched phones, careless clicks, unlocked devices. Basic hygiene defeats nearly all of it — and for the targeted threat of stalkerware, expert help beats DIY.
